Sanity is madness put to good uses.

George Santayana

The ME-anings of the word MAD

1. Angry; resentful. I am mad because you did not read my manuscript.
2. Suffering from a disorder of the mind; insane. They said Don Quixote was mad.
3. Temporarily or apparently deranged by violent sensations, emotions, or ideas: mad with rage.
4. Lacking restraint or reason; foolish: I was mad to have hired that copywriter.
5. Feeling or showing strong liking or enthusiasm: mad about Mad Men.
6. Marked by extreme excitement, confusion or agitation; frantic: a mad scramble for the elevator.
7. Boisterously gay; hilarious: we had a mad time at the Ritz.

(As I always acknowledge my sources, as a good writer should, I must thank the Online Dictionary, although I have taken some liberties.)

About The Mad Poet

I suppose the original idea for The Mad Poet's Corner came about as a result of some ranting I happened to be doing a few years ago about the state of English grammar, punctuation and spelling on the Web and in general.

Yet "mad" is such a great adjective because it has several connotations. One of these is expressed so beautifully in a translation of a Eugenio Montale poem in which the poet speaks of sunflowers "maddened by the light." A more apt word could not have been chosen!

Portami il girasole impazzito di luce.

So while I occasionally rant from time to time about things that rankle me, I am at turns dazzled, dizzied, delighted - and always in awe of life in all its beauty and absurdity.

Now, on a more prosaic note: my name is Victoria White and my clients will know me as The Virtual Writer. I run an e-based communication firm specializing in writing and editing services for the charitable sector, small business and individual authors in Canada and around the world.

You can contact me professionally at my website: http://www.thevirtualwriter.ca/

Oh, and I promise not to rant.
